Government intends to review COIDA in Parliament to include domestic workers
The Democratic Alliance has recently stated, on its website, that there is a plan for domestic workers who have suffered an injury at work, to claim from the Compensation Fund, under the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act (COIDA).
The DA stated that on 29 September 2011, they urged Parliament to ratify the International Labour Organisation’s Convention on Domestic Work and adopt the recommendations therein, to begin the process of extending protection provided by COIDA to domestic workers, both which have now been done.
The DA also urged Parliament to roll out a plan to educate employers and employees about domestic workers’ rights in order to ensure that the entire spectrum of rights and benefits available to domestic workers are made public and utilised.
Domestic workers have been urged to participate in this process.
